The Rugged Borderlands of the Eastern Himalaya

This 9-day offbeat road expedition takes you deep into the rugged landscapes, hidden valleys, and sacred Buddhist sites of Western Arunachal Pradesh. Starting from the plains of Assam, you will journey through the biodiversity of Nameri National Park, climb into the serene, less-explored Chug and Mandala valleys, and cross high-altitude passes to reach the borderlands of Tawang and Zemithang.

Designed as a driving tour rather than a bike ride, this itinerary balances raw Himalayan adventure with deep cultural immersion, utilizing charming local homestays and heritage lodges to offer an authentic taste of Monpa hospitality.

Permits, Altitude & What to Know

Inner Line Permit (ILP)

Required for all non-Arunachali Indian nationals to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Obtain online via the Arunachal Pradesh ILP portal before travel. Nepali nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) through a registered tour operator.

Bum La Pass Permits

The visit to Bum La Pass on Day 7 requires special army permits in addition to the ILP. These must be arranged in Tawang at least one day in advance through the local administration. The pass is at 15,200 ft and may be closed due to weather or military activity.

Altitude & Acclimatisation

Tawang sits at 10,000 ft; Sela Pass at 13,700 ft; Bum La at 15,200 ft. The itinerary is designed as a road tour with gradual altitude gain, but AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is still a risk. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and inform your guide immediately of any symptoms.

Road Conditions

Western Arunachal roads are mountain highways with steep gradients, landslide-prone sections, and occasional closures. A 4x4 vehicle with an experienced local driver is essential. Monsoon (June to September) is not recommended due to road instability and cloud cover.
