A Hidden Valley of Turquoise Rivers and Alpine Lakes

The Aeyo Valley lies deep within the Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary, a landscape of dense mixed deciduous forests, rushing turquoise rivers, and hidden alpine lakes. This trek is a naturalist's dream, alive with birds, primeval vegetation, and the ever-present possibility of encountering the elusive Mishmi Takin.

It is a moderately challenging hike on a narrow, root-laced trail through marshy terrain, fallen logs, hanging bridges, and steep slippery slopes. Gum boots are strongly recommended, especially in wet weather. The reward is a pristine base camp beside Aeyo Lake 2: a clear alpine lake inside a forest clearing, framed by mountains and waterfalls, with a private beach for trekkers to rest and reflect.

Day by Day

Nine days starting from Dibrugarh, through the Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary from Anini to the Aeyo Valley lakes.

Day1

Drive from Dibrugarh to Roing

Arrive in Dibrugarh. Drive from there to enter Arunachal. Overnight in a nature resort at Roing.

Day2

Drive from Roing to Anini

Start early from Roing to reach Anini by late afternoon. Meet the guide and support staff, and do a final gear check.

Day3

Anini to Bruni · Trek to Rhododendron Camp

Drive from Anini to Bruni (68 km, 2–2.5 hrs), winding through the Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary past waterfalls and the Mawu Waterfall. At Bruni, we start the trek on a root-laced, black-soil trail through dense forest of maple, rhododendron, cedar, and fir. Cross the Dri river on hanging bridges and pass the Pomo Waterfall. Reach Maple Camp after ~2 hrs, then continue 3 km to Rhododendron Camp beside the river, a birdwatcher's paradise with campfire, kitchen, and toilet.

Day4

Rhodo Camp to Base Camp via Cedar Camp

Cedar Camp to BC: 4 km, 4 hrs · BC Elevation: 3,338 m

Walk beside the Dri river with small waterfalls and log bridges. Cedar Camp is a bamboo structure beside the river with firepit and toilet. From Cedar, the trail climbs steeply to a cave rest point and crosses into the Aeyo river valley. Pass Lake 1 (3,300 m) with its dark green hue, then climb to the Lake 2 viewpoint, a small beach with breathtaking views. Base Camp sits beside Lake 2 with tents facing the lake and mountains. A perfect, exotic setting.

Day5

Base Camp to Lake 3 & 4 & Back

Round trip: 5–6 km · 3–5 hrs · Lake 3: 3,370 m

Skirt Lake 2 and climb through golden maple, cedar, and rhododendron forest. Lake 3 is an hour away, a quiet forest jewel. A short climb brings a fast gushing waterfall and a top-down view of both Lakes 2 and 3. Lake 4 lies another 30 minutes ahead where the forest opens into alpine meadow with wild grass and rhodo/juniper shrubs. The lake shifts between shades of green and blue as the light changes, pure storybook magic.

Day6

Base Camp to Rhodo Camp

Distance: 7.5–8 km · Time: 4–5 hrs

The descent is tricky. The forest path is slippery, muddy, and wild, with thick undergrowth of bamboo and bushes. The organisers cover the worst sections with branches and bamboo. Navigate roots, slick rocks, and steep sections with care, feet and knees work hard in gum boots.

Day7

Rhodo Camp to Bruni · Drive to Anini

Trek: 4 hrs · Drive: 2 hrs

Pass the postcard-perfect Pomo waterfall and grasslands on the final descent. More muck, slippery roots, wooden stairs, and rocks, but the trail eases after Maple Camp. From Bruni, we drive back to Anini with sore feet, full hearts, and a gallery of lake colours etched in memory.

Day8

Drive from Anini to Roing

Start our journey back with a day's drive from Anini to Roing

Day9

Drive from Roing to Dibrugarh
