A beginner-friendly journey through the Talle Wildlife Sanctuary near Ziro. Ancient forests, orchid trails, and a window into Apatani culture.
The Talle Valley Trek is one of the most accessible yet immersive forest treks in Arunachal Pradesh. Set inside the Tale Wildlife Sanctuary near Ziro, the trail winds through dense oak and bamboo forests, past more than a hundred species of orchids, and over a gentle pass before opening into the wide, scenic Talle campsite. The trek is named after a wild onion variety called Tale, found throughout the sanctuary.
Organised by local guides like Hibu Tatu, the trek also offers a chance to stay in a homestay and experience Apatani culture firsthand. Forest huts, built toilets, and well-marked trails make this an ideal first trek for beginners, while the biodiversity keeps even seasoned naturalists engrossed. Carry insect repellant and watch for leeches in the monsoon.
Well-maintained forest trails, built huts, and toilet facilities make this an ideal introduction to Himalayan trekking without compromising on immersion.
The Orchid Trail alone passes over a hundred species of orchids growing on oak and bamboo. When they bloom, the forest is a living bouquet.
Experience the hospitality and traditions of the Apatani tribe through local homestays around Ziro and the Talle Valley, hosted by guides like Hibu Tatu.
The sanctuary is a treasure trove for nature lovers. Ferns, orchids, birds, and butterflies fill every layer of the forest from canopy to floor.
In autumn the rhododendron and bamboo forests turn spectacular shades of gold, red, and green, creating magical morning walks beside the stream.
Ziro is well connected by road from the Arunachal capital, making this one of the easier remote treks to access in the state.

Distance: 8.5 km · Time: 3–4 hrs · Ascent: 430 m
A short 20–30 minute drive from Ziro to the Mani Pulyang forest check post. From here, a wide jeep track winds uphill to Pange. One can walk the whole way or ride in a 4x4 (monsoon can make it impassable). Pange is a forest outpost with huts, cottages, a traditional kitchen, and a forest officers' bungalow. Cross the stream to reach the Pange campsite, an open area beside flowing water ideal for birdwatching. The Orchid Trail begins nearby, passing through oak and bamboo forest with over a hundred orchid species, birds, butterflies, and optional Burma bridges and obstacle courses.
Distance: 10.5 km · Time: 4–6 hrs · Ascent: 700 m · Descent: 174 m
The trek follows an abandoned jeep track reclaimed by the jungle. The path is wide to start, narrowing as we go deeper. It is gradual and beginner-friendly, with one sustained climb of 400 m near Tasi Bidang. Eight shortcuts cut across the original meandering track, each with a bench to rest. The forest is thick with ferns, orchids, and changing tree species: oak and bamboo give way to maple, rhodo, fir, and pine after the Lebyo-Pengo Pass at 2,460 m. Tale campsite sits in a clearing beside a narrow stream, with bamboo huts, a concrete shelter, a watchtower for panoramic views, and a nearby toilet.
On clear mornings frost covers the ground and leaves, creating a magical effect in early light. Explore the rhododendron and bamboo forest trails that fork beside the camp stream. The rhodo trail is spectacular in fall, with golden and red canopies contrasting with green moss and blue skies. A longer trail leads to an abandoned helipad, requiring some clearing by guides but rewarding with open views. The watchtower above camp offers a bird's-eye panorama of the sanctuary. This is a day to slow down, observe, and absorb.
Distance: 10.5 km · Time: 3–5 hrs
An easy downhill hike back to Pange, retracing the abandoned jeep track through the same lush forest of ferns, orchids, and wildlife. From Pange, a 4x4 returns to Mani Pulyang and we drive back to Ziro, arriving by afternoon with a head full of forest colours and the quiet satisfaction of a gentle mountain journey.
Drive back to Itanagar from Ziro to end your journey.
