Tupendo Base Camp Trek

A true circuit into the Kishtwar Himalayas: alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and the snow pyramid of Tupendo rising above a remote Buddhist valley.

Grade Moderate–Hard
Best Season May–Sep

A True Circuit Beneath Tupendo's Snow Pyramid

The Tupendo Base Camp Trek takes you deep into the Kishtwar Himalayas, a dramatic landscape of glaciers, wildflowers, and pyramidal snow peaks that few trekkers ever visit. The route is a true circuit: you begin and end in Gulabgarh without retracing a single step, passing through remote Buddhist settlements, high alpine grasslands, and moraine fields under the unblinking gaze of Tupendo.

At the heart of the trek is a full-day push from meadow camp to the base of Tupendo itself, via cold alpine lakes framed by snow peaks. The valley is at its most spectacular in July and August, when wildflowers carpet the grasslands all the way to the moraine edge. This is a trek for those who want to feel genuinely far from the familiar, surrounded by silence, scale, and the raw architecture of the high Himalaya.

What Defines This Trek

Tupendo Base Camp (~4,200 m)

Sit below the peak's glacier with the full snow pyramid of Tupendo rising overhead. One of the most dramatic base camp settings in the Indian Himalaya.

Remote Kabban Village

A quiet Buddhist settlement at the threshold of the high valley. Kabban marks the transition from forested middle hills to the alpine world above.

Alpine Lakes

Cold, clear lakes sit in high basins above the moraine, framed by snow peaks and accessible via a demanding but unforgettable day hike from meadow camp.

Te Peak, Mount Spear & Phobrang

Panoramic views of some of the Kishtwar range's most dramatic peaks reveal themselves as you climb into the inner valley.

Wildflower Meadows (Jul–Aug)

In mid-summer the grasslands bloom with colour, turning the high slopes into one of the most beautiful meadow zones in the Western Himalaya.

True Circuit Route

No backtracking. The loop begins and ends in Gulabgarh, giving you a constantly changing perspective on the Kishtwar range.

Day by Day

Four days through the Kishtwar Himalayas from Gulabgarh to Tupendo Base Camp and back.

Day1

Gulabgarh to Camp Above Kabban Village

Drive: 1.5 hrs · Trek: 6 km · Ascent: 700 m

Drive from Gulabgarh to the roadhead, then begin a steady 6 km trek with 700 m of sustained gain through forested lower valley terrain. First views of surrounding ridgelines open up in the evening light. Camp just above Kabban Village, a remote Buddhist settlement at the threshold of the high valley where the real landscape of the trek begins.

Day2

Kabban Village to Meadow Camp

Trek: 6 km · Ascent: 400 m · Easy day

A deliberate, gentler day paced to conserve energy for the high-altitude push ahead. The trail climbs through the inner valley as forested terrain gives way to high alpine grasslands. Tupendo's snow pyramid comes into full view as meadow camp is reached. Surrounding peaks, Te Peak, Mount Spear, and the Phobrang massifs, reveal their profiles. Early arrival, good meal, early sleep.

Day3

Day Hike to Tupendo Base Camp & Alpine Lakes

Hike: 12 km round trip · Ascent: 500 m+ · Return to Meadow Camp

The centrepiece of the trek. A full-day push from meadow camp over 500 m of ascent through the transition zone where alpine grass gives way to rocky moraine. The alpine lakes sit in high basins above the moraine: cold, clear, and framed by snow peaks. Tupendo Base Camp lies below the lakes at the foot of the peak's glacier. The valley is most spectacular in July and August, when wildflowers carpet the slopes up to the moraine edge. Return to meadow camp for the night.

Day4

Meadow Camp to Gulabgarh

Trek: 12 km · Full descent · Drive to Gulabgarh

All downhill: 12 km of continuous descent retracing Days 1 and 2 in a single long morning. The route moves back through the alpine meadow zone, the forested middle valley, and past Kabban Village to the roadhead. A vehicle awaits for the 1.5-hour drive back to Gulabgarh. Trek ends, but the view of Tupendo stays with you.
